Known bug

Quick answer: For Transport Fever 3 not launching or immediately closing after Play, check Steam → Help → System Information for AVX2 support first on Windows or Linux; AVX alone does not meet the requirement. If AVX2 is supported and startup reaches a black screen or train sound before an internal error, try the reported ReShade cleanup and overlay checks below. A player confirmed that removing a leftover ReShade folder restored startup, but a universal fix for every launch failure, including load library error 126, is not confirmed yet.

Players also call this problem Game not lauchning, game will not start. click play, steam comes up, then 'stopping' it will not boot., game is not opening for me, [SOLVED] Internal error - An error just occurred, Failure to boot ,start , lunch game, Kein Start möglich, My game won't start., TF3 Não Inicia (TF3 Won't Start), Game wont start, load library error 126, Hra se nespustí, or An error just.... These reports describe failure to open the game or a crash during startup.

Quick facts

  • Symptoms include Play turning blue then green, “stopping,” and immediate closure.
  • Windows and Linux specifications explicitly require an AVX2-capable CPU.
  • One startup internal-error report was resolved by removing leftover ReShade files.
  • Other reports remain unresolved, including error 126 on a fresh installation.
  • An official fix covering all reported startup failures is not confirmed yet.

Steps to diagnose a failed launch

Identify what happens after pressing Play

Separate a launch that never opens a window from one that reaches a black screen, plays a train sound, and then displays an error. Players have reported both patterns. Another report describes the game appearing for one or two seconds before closing itself; others see Steam return to its green Play button without getting into the game.

Write down the exact error if one appears. “An error just occurred” and “load library error 126” are different reported messages, and the successful workaround below belongs to the internal-error case. The error-126 report has no confirmed resolution. Matching only the fact that the game closes would erase this useful distinction.

Restarting Steam and restarting the computer after installation were suggested by players as initial checks. Neither suggestion has a confirmed success in those particular reports. You can try them once, but if startup still fails, continue to the hardware check rather than assuming repeated restarts will resolve it.

Check the AVX2 line in Steam System Information

Open Steam → Help → System Information and find the processor information. Read the AVX2 entry specifically. One posted report showed AVX: Supported alongside AVX2: Unsupported on an Intel Core i7-2700K. The game failed to boot even though the same computer had an RTX 3060 and roughly 16 GB of RAM. That combination illustrates why checking only the graphics card misses an explicit CPU requirement.

Several players with older processors reported the same problem: i7-2700K, i7-3770, and i5-3470 owners described launch failures, while a laptop report listed an i7-3612QM or i7-3632QM and received the same AVX2 compatibility explanation. A German report showed a Xeon E5-1620 with AVX supported and AVX2 unsupported. These are reported examples, not a complete compatibility list; use your own system information rather than relying on the processor's i5, i7, or Xeon label.

If your report says AVX2: Unsupported, the computer does not meet the listed Windows or Linux CPU requirement. A software workaround that removes that requirement is not confirmed yet. Some affected players reported requesting refunds, but there is no confirmed promise that an upcoming patch will make those CPUs compatible.

If it says AVX2: Supported, continue. Another failed-launch report showed a Ryzen 7 9700X with AVX2 supported, and an internal-error report showed an i7-8700 with AVX2 supported. Missing AVX2 therefore does not explain every startup failure.

Compare the remaining requirements for your platform

Check the operating system, RAM, graphics hardware, available storage, and drive type as well as the CPU instruction support. Windows minimum specifications list Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, 8 GB RAM, and a GTX 1060, RX 480, or Arc A380 with 4 GB VRAM. Storage is 90 GB of available space, and an SSD is required.

Linux minimum specifications list Ubuntu 24.04 or higher, with the same minimum processor, RAM, graphics, and storage targets. On macOS, the listed minimum is macOS Sequoia 15.7 or higher, an Apple M2 Pro, and 16 GB RAM. The Mac specification explicitly says Apple Silicon Only and requires an Apple processor; it also lists 90 GB available space and an SSD.

Use the system requirements comparison for the complete platform specifications. Falling below a requirement is a compatibility concern, but the precise reason for an individual crash is not confirmed yet merely because one specification differs. Conversely, meeting the specifications does not identify which software component caused a startup internal error.

For startup internal errors, check leftover ReShade files

A player described clicking Play, hearing the train, seeing a black screen, and receiving “An error just occurred.” They had previously addressed a Transport Fever 2 problem by changing Settings.lua from Vulkan to OpenGL, but reported that this did not resolve the Transport Fever 3 startup failure.

The player later reported success after removing C:\ProgramData\ReShade. They said ReShade had been uninstalled years earlier, but the folder still existed. If you use or previously used ReShade, check for that leftover folder rather than assuming an old uninstall removed everything. Uninstall ReShade if it is still installed; preserve a backup of any files you intend to remove before testing the reported cleanup.

This is a player-confirmed result for one startup case. It is not an official instruction to delete unrelated folders, and it does not establish that every black screen is caused by ReShade. If the folder is absent, this particular leftover-folder explanation does not match your setup.

Test without the reported overlays and hooks

The same player also advised turning off OBS, the Steam Overlay, and the Rockstar Social Club launcher. Their listed Vulkan layers included OBS, Steam overlay, Steam fossilize, and Rockstar Social Club entries. If those programs are running on your computer, close them or disable the relevant overlay for a startup test.

The explicit success report was attached to removing the ReShade folder. The separate contribution of each overlay change is not confirmed yet, so treat this as a conditional troubleshooting test. A listed layer is a clue about software interacting with the game, not proof that the named program always prevents Transport Fever 3 from launching.

Avoid disabling an integrated graphics device as a blanket solution. One player with an AVX2-capable Ryzen system reported that doing so got the game running, but it was not rendering. That result did not establish a working launch into playable graphics.

Keep the error and startup log if these checks do not resolve it

For the internal-error case, players included the last lines of stdout.txt. Those excerpts recorded a minidump, the generic error box, and, in one case, a possible hang. Another excerpt showed content-cache reads immediately before the crash. Those lines record where startup ended; they do not by themselves prove that campaign content or a particular mod caused the failure.

Keep the exact message, your processor's AVX2 entry, operating system, GPU, and any relevant final log lines together. A generic report that the game will not open cannot distinguish the unsupported-CPU cases from the AVX2-capable internal-error cases. If you get error 126, preserve that wording instead of relabeling it as the solved ReShade error. Its cause and a verified repair are not confirmed yet.

Do not treat a successful file check or a newer GPU as proof of CPU compatibility. An AMD FX-8300 owner reported reinstalling C++ libraries, clearing shader and temporary files, checking file integrity three times with restarts, installing the latest NVIDIA drivers, trying Windows 8 compatibility mode, granting firewall access, and testing -borderless, -window, and -dx11. The reply identified missing AVX2 support. None of those attempted repairs was reported to solve that case. A separate Czech report also said checking files did not help. Likewise, the Transport Fever 2 Vulkan-to-OpenGL workaround was reported unsuccessful for the Transport Fever 3 internal-error case above.
